Q. Why should I use Oconee RESA for my training to become a teacher?
A. Oconee RESA utilizes cutting edge technology to encourage candidates
to reach children on the technological level they have grown to understand. By using
PODCasts, website development, online coursework, Blogs, message boards and highly
technical trainings, candidates can expect to receive the upmost training in bridging
the gap between lectures and interactive learning.
Q. How long is the program?
A. The program is two years long.
Q. What are the qualifications for admission into the program?
A. All potential candidates must have the following:
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
- Have passed or exempted the Basic Skills assessment (GACE or Praxis I)
- SAT exemptions: minimum combined verbal and math score of 1000
- GRE exemptions: minimum combined verbal and quantitative score of 1030
- ACT exemptions: minimum combined English and math score of 43
- Have two official college transcripts from all colleges attended submitted to Oconee RESA
- Have a job offer from a participating school system.
- Be able to pass a federal and local criminal background check.
- Willingness and desire to make a difference in the lives of young people.
Q. How do I find out which school systems are hiring?
A. Go to
www.teachgeorgia.org
and use their job search function to see what is available. Check it frequently
because it can change daily, even hourly.
Q. Does Oconee RESA offer an accelerated program?
A. Yes. We do offer the One Year Supervised Practicum. That program has
different requirements for acceptance and completion. Please contact us for details.
Q. Can I work as a teacher while going through the program?
A. Yes. One of the requirements to be accepted into the program is
to secure a teaching position with a participating school system.
Q. What should I do now if I am considering teaching the next school year?
A. You should request your official college transcripts from all colleges
attended. Request three copies. Have one sent to you and the other two sent to Oconee
RESA in separate, sealed envelopes.
Q. What is the Praxis or GACE test?
A. Both are special tests utilized by Georgia to assess an individuals
basic skills and content knowledge in specific subjects. The Praxis test is currently
being phased out and the GACE test is becoming the new requirement to obtain a teaching
certificate.
Q. Will I get college credit for courses taken through Oconee RESA?
A. No.
Q. If I want my Masters Degree in education, what should I do?
A. Take the GRE test and apply to a college that offers the field you
would like your degree in.
Q. What is the PSC?
A. The PSC is an acronym for the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
The PSC is the regulating body for all teaching certifications in Georgia.
