Description:

It is the mission of the Oconee RESA Environmental Services Division to provide member districts technical assistance in regard to asbestos issues in addition to ensuring that systems are in compliance with all EPD/AHERA guidelines. Oconee RESA employs a certified asbestos specialist to serve in this capacity.

The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires that custodian personnel that are employed by school systems with facilities that contain asbestos building materials receive a minimum of two hours of asbestos awareness training and maintenance personnel are required to receive a minimum of sixteen hours of asbestos training.  Also under these regulations, school districts are required to perform an original inspection to determine whether asbestos-containing materials are present and then re-inspect asbestos-containing material in each school every three years and review and update asbestos management plans accordingly.
